Why Sunshine Gets So Much Snow

Sunshine Village’s position directly on the Continental Divide creates a unique weather phenomenon. Moisture-laden Pacific systems hit the Divide and dump snow — an average of 900 cm annually, which is 2.5x more than Lake Louise and 3x more than Nakiska. The high elevation means this snow falls as dry, light Rocky Mountain powder rather than the heavier coastal snow found in BC.

The resort’s natural snow record means only 10% of terrain requires snowmaking — compared to 85% at lower-elevation Nakiska.

Three Mountains, Three Experiences

  • Lookout Mountain: The original ski area with a mix of intermediate cruisers and challenging bumps. The Continental Divide runs along the summit ridge.
  • Mount Standish: Gentle, wide-open terrain ideal for beginners and families. Connects to the village.
  • Goat’s Eye Mountain: Opened in 1995, this is where experts find their fix. Steep chutes, deep glades, and the Wild West area deliver some of the most challenging inbounds skiing in Alberta.

The Banff Tri-Area Advantage

Sunshine is part of the SkiBig3 along with Lake Louise and Mount Norquay. The SkiBig3 season pass ($2,199) provides unlimited access to all three resorts — totaling 361 trails across 7,748 acres. A free shuttle bus connects all three resorts and the town of Banff.

Getting There

Sunshine is 15 minutes from Banff townsite via the Trans-Canada Highway. You park at the base and ride the Sunshine Gondola 8 minutes up to the village at 2,160m — the skiing starts from there. Calgary International Airport is 90 minutes east.
