Silver Star: Colorful Victorian Village & Cross-Country Skiing Mecca

Silver Star Mountain Resort near Vernon, BC, is instantly recognizable for its brightly painted Victorian-era mining village at the base. The candy-coloured buildings — turquoise, crimson, yellow — create a postcard-perfect scene that is unlike any other ski resort in Canada. But the charm goes far beyond aesthetics: Silver Star delivers over 3,200 acres of terrain and one of the finest cross-country networks in North America.

Downhill Terrain: Two Faces of the Mountain

Silver Star’s terrain splits naturally into two distinct areas. The Attridge area on the front face offers wide, groomed cruisers and gentle learning terrain — ideal for families and intermediate skiers working on technique. Flip to the back side and the Putnam Creek area reveals a completely different character: steep chutes, tight glades, and sustained fall-line pitches that challenge expert skiers.

This front/back split means families can base themselves in the village, send the kids to ski school on Attridge, and the advanced skiers can disappear into Putnam Creek without driving anywhere.

Cross-Country Skiing Capital

With 105 km of groomed cross-country trails, Silver Star is one of Canada’s premier Nordic skiing destinations. The Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre, located near the resort, has hosted World Cup biathlon and cross-country events. Trails range from gentle valley loops to challenging climbs through old-growth forest, with both classic and skate-skiing tracks maintained daily.

Beyond Skiing

  • Night skiing on select runs under floodlights
  • Fat biking on groomed winter trails — a growing winter sport with dedicated routes
  • Snowshoeing, tubing, and ice skating in the village
  • Summer transforms the mountain into a mountain biking destination with extensive trail networks

The Village Experience

The pedestrian-only village core means no cars, no exhaust, just the crunch of snow underfoot as you walk between restaurants, shops, and your ski-in/ski-out accommodation. The Victorian mining town aesthetic is maintained across all buildings, giving Silver Star a cohesive character that larger, more corporate resorts simply cannot replicate.
