Le Massif de Charlevoix: Ski to Sea Level on Eastern Canada’s Biggest Vertical

Le Massif de Charlevoix offers something no other ski resort in the world can match: runs that descend from the summit all the way down to just 5 metres above the St. Lawrence River. This unique ski-to-sea concept, combined with the highest vertical drop east of the Canadian Rockies at 770 m, makes Le Massif one of the most distinctive ski destinations on the continent.

The Ski-to-Sea Experience

At most ski resorts, you look out over valleys and other mountains. At Le Massif, you ski toward the frozen St. Lawrence River. On clear days, the panoramic views of the ice-covered waterway, distant north shore, and passing ships are breathtaking. The base area sits at near sea level, which means every metre of vertical you ride up is a metre you ski down — no wasted elevation.

Eastern Canada’s Snow King

Le Massif receives an average of 650 cm of natural snowfall annually, making it the snowiest resort in eastern Canada by a wide margin. Its position on the north shore of the St. Lawrence, where cold Arctic air meets moisture off the river, creates a micro-climate that consistently delivers deep, dry powder. Eastern skiers who think they need to fly west for real snow have clearly never visited Le Massif.

Club Med & Luxury

In 2021, Club Med opened its first Canadian mountain resort at Le Massif. The all-inclusive property offers ski-in/ski-out access, gourmet dining, childcare, and the full Club Med experience — a significant upgrade for a region that previously lacked high-end slope-side accommodation.

The Charlevoix Region

  • Train de Charlevoix — a scenic railway connecting Quebec City to the resort region along the river
  • UNESCO Biosphere Reserve designation for the Charlevoix region
  • Renowned local cuisine — the region is one of Quebec’s top foodie destinations
  • Baie-Saint-Paul arts community nearby with galleries and artisan shops

Le Massif combines serious vertical, abundant natural snow, and views of the St. Lawrence that no other resort can offer. For skiers exploring eastern Canada, it is an absolute must-visit.
