Could Ogopogo Exist? The Science

Okanagan Lake: 135 km long, 232m deep (deeper than Loch Ness at 227m), 24.6 km3 volume, millions of kokanee salmon.

Most Plausible Explanation: Giant Sturgeon

White Sturgeon can grow to 3+ meters, live 100+ years. Their rare surfacing matches many sighting descriptions. They are endangered in BC.

Indigenous Context

The Syilx call the creature N’ha-a-itk (lake spirit) with traditions spanning thousands of years. Travellers offered gifts when crossing. The name “Ogopogo” from the 1920s is considered by many Syilx as trivialising.
